Cooking "Banh Tet" - Traditional cake for Tet
This year, Tet was on 23rd January 2012, just two days after I finished work. I missed the chance to make Banh Tet, thing I normally do every year. It's just because my borther family came back from Australia to join Tet, everyone was so excited, they couldn't wait to make Banh Tet - it's made of sticky rice, inside is green bean and pork. Anyway, I had a chance to to take Banh Tet out.

Fried Banh Tet

Kia ora Tue. I am so thrilled that you have written a whole paragrapgh in English. Now I need to know more about your Banh Tet. Is it like Moon cake or is it like traditional cakes in New Zealand and filled with fruit.
ReplyDeleteBanh tet is eaten with pickled papaya.
ReplyDeleteLooks good. How do you eat it? Do you use fingers or chopsticks? Looks as though you have enough for many people.
ReplyDeleteJust checking Mr Tue that this is working properly.
ReplyDeleteHiya,
ReplyDeleteWe cut Banh tet into slices and eat with pickle papaya. We also can fry them then eat. I have just uploaded some I fried today, they are the last ones. We use chopsticks to eat Banh tet.
There are 43 Banh tet, enough for many people to eat during Tet. I we prepare stuff (sticky rice, green bean and banana leaf) well and clean, we can keep them for about three weeks (in fridge)
Do you mean Dac Ho that Banh tet is only eaten at the time of Tet?
ReplyDeleteKia ora, Banh tet is mainly eaten at the time of Tet ( first 3 days of the Luna new year), but we can eat this up to 3 weeks after Tet.
ReplyDeleteWe love the days before Tet because everyone is busy buying things such as food, gifts, decorating houses...
I don't understand why Banh tet is really only eaten at Tet. Is it too expensive? Or just a special treat for Tet? Or just used to mark Tet like having Christmas cake and Christmas decorations just for Christmas?
ReplyDeleteBanh tet be served in shops?
Kia ora,
DeleteBanh tet is special for Tet, but some people cook banh tet for sale during the year. It takes a long time to make and to cook. With 40 banh tet we did this year, it took 5-6 hours to make and 11-12 hours to cook.
Banh tet is not so expensive, 40 banh tet costs about USD50. We can buy banh tet in super market or at some family shops.
